Chapter 595
Even now, she couldn't bear to think about what might have happened if little Matt hadn't been protected, if the firefighters had shown up a moment too late. Ava sighed and shook her head as she stepped out.
Not long after, Callum pushed the door open and walked in. Selena looked up, their eyes locking. He had a kind of helpless smile tugging at his lips as he approached her. Noticing how lightly she was dressed, he took off his doctor's coat and gently placed it over her shoulders.
Selena was caught off guard for a moment. Callum explained, "Ava asked me to come in and talk to you. She's worried about you."
"I'm here now, and I won't let anything happen to little Matt. You should go take a shower and get some rest, then come back."
Selena accepted the coat but wasn't keen on leaving. "You know, even if I go, I won't be able to rest. I'd rather stay here with Matt."
"Every time he gets sick, he opens his eyes looking for me. He'll be scared if I'm not around."
As she spoke, her eyes stayed tenderly on her son. The morning light streamed in, casting her face in a beautiful, yet fragile glow. It was enough to tug at anyone's heartstrings.noveldrama
Callum's hand instinctively reached out, wanting to touch her cheek, to share her fears and burdens. Just as his fingertips were about to graze her skin, the atmosphere shifted-a cold, authoritative presence swept in from the doorway.
Callum glanced up and met the man's intense, brooding eyes. As he entered, it was as if the room temperature dropped.
Selena was taken aback to see Everett's travel-worn appearance. Wasn't he supposed to be in America? How did he get here so quickly? Then she noticed the frostiness in his striking features and realized belatedly about Callum's hand near her face. Had Everett misunderstood again?
Selena stood as Everett strode over,
his long arms wrapping around her waist, pulling her close, while creating distance between her and Callum with an unmistakable air possession. She glanced sideways at Everett's tight jawline, swallowing the lump in her throat, wanting to avoid a confrontation. She intended to explain.
But Everett spoke first, not with accusations or jealousy, but simply asking, "How's the child?"
Selena was momentarily stunned before she replied, "He's alright, just hasn't woken up yet."
Everett nodded, concealing his worries within his gaze. "My son is naturally blessed with a strong fate."
"You... how did you come back?" Selena asked.
Her question made Everett frown, clearly displeased. "My son's in trouble. How could I not come back? And from the incident until now, you haven't called me once, Selena. What were you thinking? Is the child just yours?"
If it hadn't been for his uneasy feeling during the flight, urging him to have Alex check the news as soon as he landed, he wouldn't have known about the incident.
"I..."
Selena's lips moved, but the words
wouldn't come. Truthfully, she hadn't thought to inform him. For the past three years, whenever something happened with their child, she handled it alone. She was used to it. Even now, back by his side, her heart hadn't found room for him.
Her silence spoke volumes to Everett. For a moment, it felt like his heart had been pierced by a sharp blade. His breathing quickened, his handsome face shadowed with anger, realizing how foolish he felt rushing back, worried and scared.
Selena stood there, unsure of what
to do. Everett's dark eyes stayed on her, the storm within them shifting But in the end, he suddenly pulled her close, wrapping her in his arms. His lips brushed her ear as he whispered something in a husky vojce, and instantly, Selena's eyes welled up, tears spilling down...
