Chapter 594
"Here they come! Here they come!" someone in the crowd yelled, "We've got an injured kid here, doctors, get over here quick!"
Selena stopped dead in her tracks and whipped around, her gaze locked on a firefighter carrying a small figure. Even through the darkness and distance, and despite the child's face being smudged with soot, she knew immediately. It was her precious Mateo!
She ripped off her mask and rushed over.
Little Mateo was laid out on a stretcher, unconscious, his condition unclear as emergency responders worked frantically over him.
Selena stood nearby, tears streaming down her cheeks as she watched her son.
Ricky was murmuring prayers of thanks that at least the boy was out of the inferno; they couldn't bear to think how the night might have ended otherwise.
Luckily, Mateo didn't have any visible injuries, a small blessing, but he must've inhaled a lot of smoke, so he needed to get to the hospital fast for a thorough check-up.
They fitted him with an oxygen mask and loaded him into the ambulance, with Selena climbing in right behind him.
Clinging to her son's small hand, she kept kissing it, her heart brimming with relief and gratitude.noveldrama
One of the paramedics commented, "Ma'am, your little guy is really lucky. If it hadn't been for one of his teachers, who shielded him, giving him the only fireproof jacket and holding him tight, he might have been burned, or worse, might not even be here now." Selena froze.
She'd been so focused on Mateo that she hadn't noticed anything else.
She asked for more details.
The paramedic explained, "The firefighters told us that when they were trapped with no way out, the teacher saved your son by giving him the fireproof jacket and hugging him close, keeping him from getting burned."
"But that teacher got it bad. When they found him, his back was all burned. We don't know if he'll pull through."
Selena's heart ached.
She hadn't realized it was a teacher who had saved Mateo and didn't even know who it was...
Grateful but overwhelmed, she called Ricky, asking him to stay at the hospital and keep tabs on the teacher's condition, ready to help however he could. Once they reached the hospital, Mateo was rushed into surgery.
Callum arrived in a hurry and, before Selena could get a word out, he reassured her, "Don't worry, I know what's going on, and I'll be in the OR with him." "Thank you, thank you," Selena choked out through her tears.
"Mateo's always been a tough little guy; he'll get through this. No more tears."
Callum reached out to pat her head but paused mid-motion. Regaining his composure quickly, he turned and entered the operating room.
As the red light above the surgery room glowed, Selena leaned against the cold wall, her hands clasped together in silent prayer.
She pleaded for mercy, for her child to be okay, even if it meant giving up years of her own life.
Maybe the heavens did hear her prayers. Though Mateo had some minor injuries and had breathed dangerous amount of smoke, leading to carbon monoxide
poisoning and damage to histungs and airways, his life was spared.
Given his young age, they'll have to watch for any complications down the road.
But his life was saved.
After Mateo was settled in his hospital room, Selena stayed glued to his side, not daring to budge or even blink. Terrified that if she closed her eyes, her child might vanish again.
She spent the entire night like this.
Ava felt for both the kid and Selena.
Selena looked a mess
herself-clothes dried by the wind hair all over the place, lips pale and chapped, and she hadn't had a drop of water since the ordeal began.
If she kept this up, by the time Mateo woke up, she might collapse herself.
She urged Selena to take a break,
but it was like talking to a wall. Clutching her child's hand to her. cheek, Selena whispered, "I have to be here when Mateo wakes up. He'll want his mom first."
