Chapter 401
For the first time in forever, Renae finally felt a spark in her heart. Matthew's arm was nestled against something soft. As they moved, he felt flustered, and it showed in the way he spoke. "Look. Even if I wanted to help you, who am I supposed to go after?"
He could barely keep it together. The charm of a mature woman had thrown him for a loop.
Compared to the inexperienced Rachel, Renae was in a league of her own. With the way Renae moved and spoke, any man would fall under her thumb.
Renae thought for a moment and said, "I have a feeling that Ted knows something. When he first came to seek medical help, he complained of ringing in his ears. However, I didn't see any signs of inflammation, and it didn't seem like an imbalance of energy or any related symptoms. "Even though I'm a doctor, he thought I wouldn't be able to figure out the ringing in his ears. But I saw right through him. After that, he kept using it as an excuse to come to me for medical advice."
Matthew nodded. It appeared that Renae's medical expertise had truly come into its own, but he couldn't wrap his head around why she didn't expose Ted.
"You knew Ted wasn't up to anything good, so why didn't you turn him down?"
Renae shook her head. "If I turn Ted away, they might send someone else to approach me next time. It would only make things harder for me."
Matthew realized Reane made a good point. So she was both clever and careful.
Renae continued, "Ted always seemed to find a way to ask about the medical books. He talked about a friend who collects antiques, with a focus on medical stuff. Some of the medical literature could sell for millions of dollars. He asked if I had any old medical literature." Matthew recalled Howard was collecting medical literature as well.
They were all after the book from Medieval Sect called Medieval Medicine. And this time, in the search for Afflictan Sect's Scholarly Tradition, someone tried the same tactic again.
It didn't take Matthew long to realize that, when it came to finding something, nothing was more effective than money.
Renae didn't sell her medical literature but stayed in this rundown village, making a living as a doctor. Her character was truly admirable. Matthew couldn't help but feel more respect for Reane.
"How about we start by investigating Ted?"
Upon finishing his sentence, Matthew heard the noise of hurried footsteps from the door. He looked over and saw Ted storming in with a small group.
There were more than ten people, each of them wielding a baseball bat. Each of them looked fierce and ready for a fight.noveldrama
Matthew muttered, "Ted's here."
Upon seeing the scene at the doorway, Renae's expression turned pale. There were far too many of them. Meanwhile, Matthew only had one person with him. "What now? How about you climb over the wall and get away first?"
Matthew furrowed his brows. Renae's suggestion made it seem like he was here for an affair and just got caught by the husband.
"Relax. I can handle it."
As Matthew spoke, he reluctantly slipped his arm out of Renae's grasp. Facing the doorway, he took a step forward and shielded her behind him.
Standing behind Matthew, Renae
looked at his figure that was
protecting her, and it felt like a wall stood before her to keep the
dangers away. For some reason, she felt much more at ease.
It had been ages since Renae had a man to protect her. Just being behind one felt amazing.
Ted arrived at the door and noticed Matthew hadn't left. He pointed his baseball bat at Matthew and shouted, "You punk! Now you will know what happens when you cross me!
"All of my life, no one in Norwynn District has had the nerve to challenge me. How dare you hit me, you idiot? I'm going to put you in your place."
Feeling confident because of his
superior numbers, Ted believed
Matthew wouldn't dare to make a
move and walked inside with hint
baseball bat. Upon entering,
however, he saw Trevor standing near the door.
Raising his baseball bat, Ted snapped, "Get out of my way if you don't want to get hurt."
"Okay," Trevor said and quickly made way. He seemed terrified as if he couldn't wait to cut ties with Matthew.
Matthew was taken aback. Standing proud as an elite soldier trained by Brad in the military, how could Trevor just back down like that?
Ted didn't expect to see Matthew's
companion chicken out because of
his number and became even more arrogant As he walked over to Matthew with his baseball bat, he shouted, "Get on your knees! promise I won't beat you to death."
What do you think?
